Is genetic testing covered by insurance?
Yes — many major insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, cover psychiatric genetic testing when it is medically indicated. Coverage varies by plan and may require prior authorization. Collection is done in-office with a simple cheek swab — a soft cotton swab gently rubbed against the inside of your cheek for about 30 seconds. There is no blood draw, no needles, and no discomfort. The sample is then sent to our certified laboratory partner for analysis. The entire collection process takes under two minutes.
How long does it take to get results?
Results are typically available within 5–7 business days from the date the sample reaches the laboratory. Your ACC psychiatrist will then schedule a follow-up appointment to review results with you in detail and update your treatment plan accordingly. Telehealth follow-up appointments are available for patients across Florida.
Do I need to be an existing ACC patient to get genetic testing?
No. We welcome new patients specifically seeking genetic testing as part of their psychiatric care. A brief clinical consultation with one of our board-certified psychiatrists is required before testing is ordered to ensure the appropriate panel is selected and results are interpreted correctly within your clinical context.
Will genetic testing tell me exactly which medication to take?
Genetic testing provides critically important guidance — not a single definitive answer. It tells your psychiatrist which medications your body is likely to metabolize well, which may cause problems, and which are likely to be ineffective. This data, combined with your clinical history, symptoms, and your psychiatrist’s expertise, leads to the most informed medication decision possible.
The cheek swab collection must be done in-person at our North Miami clinic. However, the consultation before testing and the results review appointment can both be conducted via secure telehealth for patients across Florida. Our team will coordinate the logistics to make the process as convenient as possible for you.
